Mission statement

St. Columba’s College sports policy is set against the backdrop of the Mercy Philosophy of Education which ‘committed to holistic development and to the achievement of the full potential of each student particularly those who are disadvantaged or marginalised’. It acknowledges health benefits that sport can yield both in childhood and in later adulthood. The policy is informed by the physical education syllabus and can be described as an extension of the physical education programme. PE is based on a holistic concept of physical activity for young people and it ‘recognises the physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions of human movement and emphasis the contribution of physical activity to the promotion of individual and group well being’.

The school attempts, through its PE syllabus and extra curricular activities, to engage both students and staff in sporting activity. The wide range of activities available allows the school community to take part at whatever level they are at in an atmosphere of fun. The programme allows for mass participation and also the enhancement of the elite sports people.
