St Columba's Rugby News

The St Columbas rugby season 2015/16 has begun in earnest and there is much to be proud of. Fifteen lucky u13/first year players had an unique experience when they represented the school at a blitz stages at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The boys played a school from Cork and won on the practice pitch before moving inside the stadium and onto the hallowed turf to play St Paul’s Raheny, Dublin. Although there was no silverware to play for the Donegal boys won both their games and represented their school admirably.

They were then given a tour of the changing rooms before moving upstairs to the presidential suite for refreshments and to watch Ireland beat France in the World Cup Pool Match before the long but happy journey home.

Elsewhere the boys u18 team have begun their campaign with a win against Rosses and a draw against Carndonagh. They will need to win against Colaiste Colmcille, Ballyshannon to assure progress to the knock-out stages of the Donegal cup.

In the Ulster Grammar school’s competition they played and lost to St Columb’s Derry in a qualifying match for the first round. They will now play in the Plate Competition.

The u16 boys started their year at the Pollock Cup qualifier in Letterkenny and though they wone two of their matches they lost out to St Eunan’s who then travelled to Ballymena to represent the county. Matches in the Donegal Cup against Carndonagh and Colaiste Ailigh await.

The u14 boys and the girls begin their series of matches after Christmas but training is well underway. Several of the girls have been talent-spotted already for the Ulster girls u-18 team and their coach is confident they will do well in the County girls u15 and u18 competitions
